Abstract

Family research in anorexia nervosa and bulimia is discussed with regard to three groups of variables: (a) demographic features; (b) individual pathology in the family, and (c) family relationships. The bulk of reports are clinical descriptions with a rather idiosyncratic value. Therefore, only those investigations are taken into account which meet minimal methodological requirements: clinical studies with intergroup and intragroup comparisons, self-report studies, and observational studies. Regardless of the varying methodological quality of the available research, there is some convergent evidence for certain salient family features: (a) higher social class, which is related to higher incidence of weight problems in the family; (b) high incidence of physical illness, affective disorder, and alcoholism in the relatives; and (c) controlling interdependent family relationships together with parental discordance.
